Weekly Update 4.3.16-4.9.16

Librarian's Day:
Please make sure Paula knows how much we appreciate her efforts to engage our students in critical thinking and problem solving in the Makerspace. Most importantly, she encourages our students' love of reading!

Learning Labs:
Please meet in the PD room this week.  We will be looking at data and student progress.  Grades 3-5 will get a brief bit of information on MAP tests.  In addition, we are excited to share the progress of our outdoor learning space and have some hands on STEM time in the garden with our new Science carts.

PTG Sponsored Grant-Due April 7th:
I have been getting a few questions about this grant.  Please take any of the ideas you had on our Dream Big list and add them to the PTG grant application.  I will be sending an email later in the year for table requests.  Anything not filled by the PTG, will be under consideration at the building level.  I strongly encourage each of you to take advantage of this GIFT and complete the application in the next week even if you just copy the items from your Dream Big list.   So far, only 1 teacher has completed submitted their request.

Visualizing 21st Century Classroom Design:  Problem-based learning, makerspaces, flipped learning, student blogging -- these are becoming perceived staples of 21st-century learning. With such ambitious practices taking the spotlight for how people regard modern classrooms, it's not surprising that a murmur of impracticality or skepticism is still a frequent response when they're first introduced.  So how do we encourage teachers everywhere to believe that great changes can happen in their classrooms? By helping them envision small, practical steps that will lead them there. Here are five elements of 21st-century classrooms, along with concrete suggestions that teachers can visualize and implement today.
This is an AWESOME article you will for sure want to bookmark and come back to.  What is one new thing you are going to try from reading this?  Post it in the comments.
In this scene from Facing the Giants (a great movie by the way), we see what happens with determination and grit. This clip shows a coach who helps his players see what they are truly capable of and how to fully utilize their hidden potential.  Sound like anyone around Concord?  The moral of this scene is about giving everything you’ve got towards whatever it is you are called to do in life.  Can’t wait to hear how this clip inspires you and/or your class.

A huge thank you to Mr. Loos, Mr. Trask, and all of the garden volunteers for their efforts in the garden on Saturday. Our iDiscover project is coming to life!

  1. Continue to enhance the learning space in my classroom to allow for ONGOING creativity (nooks, partner pods, tables, a little makers space...)

  2. I would like to explore some of the apps listed that I have not used before and try a few in my classroom.

  3. I love the classroom design with NO DESKS! This is exactly what I want in my room to encourage the flexibility and comfort needed for my students to be completely engaged.
